2015_01

Acrylic and oil on linen panel, 24x24x2”, 2015

About this work:

As the title suggests, this was the first work I completed in 2015—my final year of grad school. At this time I had moved my studio in SCAD’s Alexander Hall to my home, in order to be able to maximize the amount of time I could spend working as I began preparing for my solo thesis exhibition that summer. Continuing my explorations of geometric abstraction, this piece also utilized chance processes to determine the composition—foreshadowing both my //Spectrum series which would follow shortly after, and my later Eureka series. Here, I associated each of six different widths of tape, ranging from 1/8” to 1.5”, to each number on both a red and a green six-sided die. The red die was for the spacing between each strip of tape, and the green was for the width of tape that I would use. Always interested in color theory, I decided to explore complimentary colors blue and orange. I used only cobalt blue and vat orange, straight from the tube—both of which are very intense colors on their own. When complimentary colors with equal levels of intensity are paired together, it typically creates jarring vibrations, however, by layering complimentary colors over each other results in the interesting neutral tones found here.
