V U L C A N
V U L C A N
Acrylic on patterned-fabric, shaped panel, 2019. Maximum dimensions (HxWxD) are 17x17.25x3”. This work varies in depth to 1” on the lower right.
The subtle V-shaped composition in this work—established in relation to the overall form and the angles of the adjacent sides—reminded me of the Vulcan symbol of peace—”live long and prosper” from Star Trek. I chose the title Vulcan because it also has some mythological and art historical connotations and connections, such as to Velazquez’s “Apollo in the Vulcan’s Forge”. The Roman god Vulcan was a blacksmith, and the regular percussion of a blacksmith’s hammer comes through in the White Stripes in this work. Of course, visually the work also draws quick associations to The Black Keys on a piano...
V U L C A N was painted on patterned fabric adhered to a shaped art panel of my own design and construction. I used only professional-quality acrylic paint with an excellent lightfastness rating in the creation of this work, and varnished it to further ensure that the white paint and black fabric both retain their intensity for a lifetime. This work is signed, titled, and dated on the back. This work is wired on the back as well and is ready to hang. No framing is necessary, as the composition extends to the sides of the work and is integral to its presentation.
